That's our mission — and every struggling reader we help is one step closer.
I started The Skillful Reader because I kept meeting the same child in different homes: bright, curious, full of ideas — and quietly convinced they were "just not a reader."
It was never true. When you look closely, struggling readers almost always share the same story: nobody ever closed a small decoding gap, and that small gap grew into a wall. By 4th or 5th grade, school asks children to read to learn — and a child who is still fighting the words on the page starts to sink, in every subject at once.
The Science of Reading has shown us for decades exactly how reading develops and how to fix these gaps. What families lacked was a way to put that science into daily practice at home — without babyish stories, without hour-long battles, and without needing a specialist at the kitchen table.
So we built it. Fifteen focused minutes a day: a precise diagnostic that finds the exact gap, high-interest stories that respect a child's age, instant decoding tools for the moment they get stuck, and a progress report a parent can actually understand. No shame. No busywork. Just the right practice, every day.
Our goal is ambitious and simple: one million strong readers. If your child is one of them, we're honored to be part of their story.

Founder, The Skillful Reader
Every feature is grounded in the Science of Reading — decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension taught the way research says brains learn to read.
A struggling 8th grader is not a beginner — they're a reader with a gap. Our stories and tools respect their age, interests, and pride.
Parents shouldn't need a teaching degree to help. We show real progress in plain language, so every family can see the gains and celebrate them.
