Most reading apps are collections of games and quizzes around a library of books. The Skillful Reader works like a focused reading lesson at home: it finds the gap, practices it daily, shows you how your child responds, and explains what comes next.
It starts by finding the actual gap
Most apps guess a reading level and start there. We begin with a short reading check that covers eight skills and points to the specific breakdown, often a small decoding gap from years earlier, so practice starts at the real problem, not the symptom.
Stories built for older struggling readers
A struggling 6th grader doesn't want a story about a lost puppy. Every passage is Hi-Lo: high-interest for the child's age, written at the level they can actually read. Practice feels respectful, not babyish.
15 minutes a day, not another battle
Long sessions are where reading practice goes to die. A daily session is deliberately short: a quick review of recent tricky words, focused word work, one story, and a few questions. It is designed to be sustainable, so it actually happens.
Read-aloud help without pressure
The optional read-aloud microphone follows along on screen and highlights where your child slows down. It is never used to grade your child, and by default nothing is recorded. Families can choose to save a read-aloud for an adult to review, and delete it anytime.
Progress parents can actually understand
Instead of a vague level, you see what your child is working on today, why it was chosen, and how they responded, in plain language. No ads, no trackers, and we never sell your family's data.
The practice changes as your child changes
What comes next depends on how the reader responds. Words your child misses come back in later warm-ups. When the evidence shows a skill is ready, the plan moves to the next one. Every change comes with a short reason you can read.
