What the Reading Growth Check tells you, and what it cannot

A starting point, not a label

The free Reading Growth Check is an instructional starting point for grades 3 to 8. A parent or guardian creates the account and gives consent. Your child answers short questions, then you receive a Reading Profile with strengths, areas to practice, and a first priority. It is not a clinical diagnosis, a dyslexia evaluation, a Lexile score, or a grade-equivalent result.

What the questions help explore

Short tasks sample reading-related skills such as word patterns, word parts, vocabulary, and understanding text. Answers support a profile of the skills sampled, not a complete account of everything your child can do.

A brief check can be affected by attention, unfamiliar vocabulary, or help from someone nearby. Use the profile alongside what the teacher and your child tell you.

What you receive

The Reading Profile shows strengths, growth areas, and a first practice priority, with a next step in plain language. Oral reading fluency is shown as needing additional evidence unless it has been checked separately.

There is no Lexile score, grade-equivalent claim, or dyslexia diagnosis. You can request an email copy of the results from the results page.

How the priority leads to practice

Daily membership practice builds on that first priority. Sessions take about 15 minutes and move through Word Work, Words and Knowledge, Reading the Story, Making Meaning, and Quick Review. School grade guides age-appropriate presentation and interests; the instructional starting point guides the skills practiced.

Independent practice is the default. Completed activities show participation and saved answers inform the next practice recommendation, but activity alone does not prove mastery. Measured oral reading fluency requires an adult-checked read. Practice rereads stay separate from first-time reading evidence, and automatic speech scoring does not determine your child's results.
